Celebrating LGBTQIA+ History Month with a Film Screening

In honour of LGBTQIA+ History Month, 25 students from across campus gathered for a special screening of the film 'Love, Simon'. The event offered an opportunity for students to come together, share their voices, and reflect on the importance of LGBTQIA+ representation.

One Year 10 student shared, "It is so important to celebrate LGBTQIA+ and have our voices heard." The film was chosen for its heartfelt portrayal of Simon Spier, a closeted gay teenager who must navigate balancing his personal life, a blackmailer threatening to expose his secret, and his growing feelings for an anonymous classmate he has fallen in love with online.

Another Year 10 student commented, "I think it's healthier to come out on your own terms rather than letting others dictate when you should," emphasising the film’s message of self-acceptance and courage.

The screening was met with such enthusiasm that a Year 11 student remarked, "Can we do this every Friday, please?" After the film, students were encouraged to write their own reviews, providing them with a chance to engage more deeply with the movie’s themes.

Mrs. Chalmers, who helped organise the event, reflected, "What a lovely way to spend a Friday afternoon, and it was wonderful to see students from both schools coming together to share their voices. It was so lovely to celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month together."

The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of representation, understanding, and community. The students left feeling inspired and eager for more opportunities to celebrate diversity and inclusion.
