Step into the NHS: Year 9 Careers Event

Our Year 9 students had the unique opportunity to explore NHS careers through a full day of engaging virtual sessions. The event allowed students to interact with NHS professionals and gain first-hand insights into the qualities and skills required for various job roles.

The day was divided into four engaging workshops, starting with Session 1, where Abi, an NHS careers expert, introduced students to the NHS. Through various interactive activities, they met several NHS professionals and learnt about an upcoming competition. A self-reflection quiz also helped students assess their own interests and skills.

Session 2 focused on exploring various NHS careers. The students took part in a "Guess the Job Role" activity, led by Alicia and Paul, both NHS professionals. Matilda remarked, “It was so good to see different roles; I’m shocked by some of the pay when these people save lives.”

In Session 3, students explored the skills and compassion needed to work in the healthcare sector, aligning perfectly with our school motto: "Learn to care, care to learn." They also gained valuable insights into what it takes to become a Junior Doctor, Dentist, or Radiographer in the healthcare industry.

The final session featured insightful conversations with Paul, a cybersecurity specialist, and Salma, an orthotist. They shared what a ‘Day in the Life’ in the NHS looks like. Isla said, “I really want to be a Midwife, but it was good to be able to look at other careers. They said that no day is ever the same, but teamwork is key." Roberta added, “I really enjoyed today. I wouldn’t change anything; it was really interesting.”

The students demonstrated excellent behaviour, making the most of the opportunity to ask questions and complete their booklets. Mrs. Chalmers praised the event, stating, “It is so important for our students to have careers and medical experiences outside the classroom. Being part of the NHS event was such a valuable experience for our Year 9 students.”
