Year 12 Biology Students Explore Electron Microscopy

Our Year 12 biology students recently had the exciting opportunity to visit Plymouth University’s Electron Microscope Lab at Derriford. During the visit, they delved into the world of electron microscopy and gained insight into the intricate process of preparing slides for both Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopes.

The slide preparation process is meticulous and time-consuming, yet the students found it both informative and engaging as they learnt how these powerful microscopes operate. They also viewed high-resolution images from both types of microscopes, which included close-ups of kidney biopsies, a sheep tick, and biofilm samples from patients with gum disease (periodontitis).

The students were in awe of the incredible level of detail captured by the microscopes, with images revealing structures far beyond the capabilities of the human eye. One student commented, “I was amazed by how much detail you can see through these microscopes – it was so fascinating.” Another student said, “This experience has really inspired me to think about a future career in laboratory science.”

This experience gave our students a deeper understanding of cutting-edge research techniques, igniting their curiosity about the vast potential of scientific discovery. Many left with a newfound appreciation for the role technology plays in modern biology and the exciting opportunities it presents for the future.
