Exploring RAF Careers: A Visit from Sgt. Liam Quinn
Scott College recently welcomed Sgt. Liam Quinn of the Royal Air Force (RAF), who spoke to students from Years 9 through 12 about the wide-ranging opportunities available in the RAF. With over 60 different career paths, countless chances for sport and travel, and opportunities to learn new skills, the RAF offers an exciting and dynamic future.
During the session, Sgt. Quinn shared a personal story about his three-year voluntary posting in Cyprus, where he lived with his wife and children in a three-bedroom home complete with a swimming pool. With six months off during his time there, he showcased the unique perks and flexibility of life in the RAF.
Students were captivated by a video illustrating how the RAF operates to protect not only the UK but also to support missions worldwide. Sgt. Quinn explained that the RAF undertakes 15–20 missions daily across four continents and 22 countries, highlighting the global impact of their work.
The talk also provided valuable information about apprenticeships and higher education. Sgt. Quinn emphasised the RAF’s support for education, explaining that there are over 20 apprenticeships available with a starting salary of £27,500. When asked by Year 12 student Amelie about nursing and university opportunities, Sgt. Quinn explained that the RAF covers university tuition, offers the same starting salary during study, and increases pay to £35,000 upon qualification.
Max from Year 11 also enquired about sports opportunities within the RAF. Sgt. Quinn emphasised that the RAF encourages everyone to participate in sports to maintain fitness and well-being. He also shared that he gets paid to play football for the RAF and highlighted the personal training career option, which allows individuals to promote fitness while earning a salary.
The session opened students’ eyes to the exciting range of career possibilities within the RAF, from apprenticeships and education to sports and global missions. With its unique blend of adventure, skill development, and rewards, the Royal Air Force is far from an ordinary job!
