Celebrating International Pronouns Day

Yesterday, staff and students at Scott Medical and Healthcare College joined in celebrating International Pronouns Day. The event aimed to raise awareness and encourage conversations about the importance of pronouns in fostering respect and inclusivity.

Staff members were invited to wear stickers displaying their chosen pronouns, sparking meaningful discussions throughout the school. Year 10 student Amelia shared, "Pronouns are a good way of identifying people." Cameron added, "Pronouns are inspirational as they help us identify ourselves."

In addition to these conversations, a PowerPoint presentation was displayed in social spaces, explaining what pronouns are and why they matter. Pronouns, such as "she," "he," and "they," are words we use when referring to someone without using their name. For example:

  • "She went to the park to meet her friends."

  • "What did they say on the phone?"

  • "He was looking for his shoes, which were right in front of him."

The presentation highlighted that no matter which pronoun a person uses, it’s essential to respect their choice. People may use different pronouns based on their gender identity and what feels most comfortable for them. By using the correct pronouns, we show respect for who they are.

Year 10 student, Molly reflected, "People should express themselves how they would like to, and we need to respect that." Charlie also added, "It taught me more about the different pronouns and why people use them."
