Criminology students visit Plymouth University's Criminology Department
In an enriching experience that bridged academia with real-world applications, Year 12 students recently delved into the world of criminology at Plymouth University's Criminology Department.
Led by Dr. Iain Channing, the students received a comprehensive insight into university life and the diverse array of criminology courses available.
The visit commenced with an immersive overview of life at Plymouth University, offering glimpses into seminars, lectures, and the wide spectrum of study options. Students gained valuable insights into the study demands and the vibrant community that characterises university life.
However, the highlight of the day was the opportunity to apply criminological theories and investigative techniques to solve a simulated murder mystery. The crime scene, meticulously set up in the crime house, presented students with the challenge of collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and scrutinising suspects. Engaging in hands-on problem-solving, students tapped into their analytical skills to unravel the intricacies of the case.
From law enforcement and criminal justice to forensic psychology and policy analysis, students gained invaluable insights into the diverse professional avenues awaiting them post-18.
Reflecting on the experience, one student expressed profound appreciation, stating, "The trip really showed how criminology students like me can apply their knowledge to real-life situations such as considering the motive of murderers etc. It was also extremely informative, learning about university life such as what seminars, lectures, and your choices for studying are."
